The White Knight is a fictional character from the novel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll. He is based upon the chess piece of the same name.

DescriptionEdit

In Chapter Eight, the White Knight rescues Alice from the Red Knight and proceeds to escort her to the eighth square of the chess board. As they talk, he reveals that he is an inventor and proceeds to display some of his inventions, much to her amusement. These include a carrying-case that only opens at the bottom (to keep out the rain) and a set of spiked anklets to protect his horse from sharks. They eventually reach the square and the Knight rejoices by singing the song, Haddocks' Eyes. He and Alice then politely part company and he rides away into the forest.

The Knight is memorable for his absurd style of horse-riding: leaning forward over the bridle while balancing upright in the stirrups. As can be expected, he falls from the saddle many times during his journey with Alice, even after she points out that he's riding improperly. According to the dramatis personae of Through the Looking-Glass, the White Knight is actually the White King's knight.[1]
