The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits) is a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll in 1874. Although the poem borrows occasionally from Carroll's short poem "Jabberwocky" in Through the Looking-Glass, especially the creatures like the Bandersnatch and certain words, but is still a stand-alone work. It is also the longest poem Carroll has written.
Plot[]
The poem tells the story of a crew leaded by the Bellman. He has a map of the Ocean (which is in fact a blank sheet of paper) which leads them to arrive in a strange land. The Baker, one of the members of the crew, remembers that his uncle once said that one must be careful while cathing Snarks because if a Snark is a Boojum, it will vanish away and will never return. Knowing that, the hunting party splits up to hunt. During the hunt, the Butcher and the Beaver who also belong to the crew, become good friends, the Barrister falls asleep and sees in his dream a court trial which is defended by the Snark and the Banker becomes insane after he is attacked by the Bandersnatch. Finally, the Baker calls for the others that he has found a Snark, but as the others arrive, it has vanished because it was a Boojum.
