The Gryphon is a fictional character from the novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. True to the conventional view of a gryphon, he has the head, talons, and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion.

Description[]

The Gryphon features in Chapters Nine and Ten. It was ordered by the Queen to take Alice to meet the Mock Turtle; this he did, and stayed with them for a long time, demanding that the Turtle tell its history, as well as several poems. The two creatures go on to explain certain features of their world which are apparently nonsense to Alice, before Alice and the Gryphon are summoned to a criminal trial, leaving the Mock Turtle behind.

The Gryphon appears to be somewhat overbearing and dismissive of the obsessions and dismays of other characters, such as the Mock Turtle's sorrow and the Queen of Hearts' executions, neither of which (according to the Gryphon) have any basis in fact. He speaks with a slightly ungrammatical Cockney-like accent and makes demands of the Mock Turtle, which are obeyed despite the latter creature's implicit objections. In addition, he is prone to making cough-like sounds written as "Hjckrrh!", which seem to have little meaning and may be involuntary.

Other Appearances[]

  • The Gryphon also appears in the 1999 film of Alice in Wonderland.
  • In the anime and manga Pandora Hearts, the Gryphon was the Vessalius family's chain and Zai Vessalius's chain.
  • In the video game "American McGee's Alice", the Gryphon appears with his head resembling that of a bald eagle. He is killed by the Jabberwock, only to be revived after Alice defeats the Red Queen and gains her sanity.
  • In the 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland, the Red Queen has a mural in her throne room of the Gryphon and the Jabberwock battling. It has a narrow beak with large talon-like lion legs and no wings. Since the Jabberwock is unscathed from the encounter, it is likely that the Gryphon was killed trying to destroy the Jabberwock.
  • In the sequel of the The Looking Glass Wars, "Seeing Redd", he makes a cameo as a normal gryphon being eaten by Jack of Diamonds in King Arch's tent.
  • In the anime "Project ARMS", one of the Keith series ARMS weapon was code named the Gryphon.
