Alice's sister is a character from Lewis Carroll's Alice stories. She, unlike her sister, didn't mind the customs and ways that women acted in that time period.
Description[]
This character is the sister of Alice, implied to be the elder as Alice is referred to as, "this same little sister of hers". Her character is likely a fictionalized counterpart to Lorina Charlotte "Ina" Liddell (1849-1930), the real-life elder sister of Alice Liddell who was also inspiration for the Lory at the Caucus Race.
Other appearances[]
Alice in Wonderland (1951)[]
Alice's sister appears notably at the beginning and end of this film with a no-nonsense personality. She attempts to teach history to a bored Alice then taking her back home for tea.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)[]
“Remember Alice, look before you leap.”
In this film, Alice's sister is named Margaret Manchester as she is married to a man named Lowell Manchester. She appears at the Ascots' party at the beginning and end of the movie.
Alice and her sister have always had different interests. If Margaret wanted to sit in the grass and read, Alice wanted to go on an adventure. This reflected how their parents treated them. Alice's father said all the best people are mad, while her mother was very angry at her for not wearing a corset nor stockings. It seems as if Margaret mirrors their mother while Alice mirrors their father. Alice loved adventure and Maragaret loved to read and think about history and literature.
Alice: Madness Returns[]
While not mentioned in the first-game, Alice's sister has a prominent role in the backstory of the second where she is given the name of Elizabeth "Lizzie" Liddell. Like the rest of Alice's family, Lizzie died in the fire which destroyed their home. However, Alice recovering forgotten memories reveals that she was receiving unwanted advances from their father's apprentice Angus Bumby whom she wanted nothing to do with. Because of this, Bumby broke into the Liddell's home and sexually assaulted Lizzie in her room before either murdering her or leaving her unconscious and starting the fire to cover-up his crimes. Bumby kept the key to Lizzie's room as a trophy afterwards, leading to Alice taking the key as evidence and kicking him into a train-track to avenge her sister and their parents.
Trivia[]
- In the Alice in Wonderland play, she is given the name of Mathilda.
